Of course, the workers were not the only ones affected by this tension. Throughout the entire morning, Queen Ruby’s mood had been abysmal. It was, without a doubt, one of the worst days imaginable for anyone tasked with serving her directly. She found fault in everything — the timing, the silence, the smallest imperfections — and although she never resorted to physical punishment, a single disapproving glance from her was far worse than a slap could ever be. Her fury was restrained, controlled, and all the more terrifying for it. The reason for her temper was simple. Too simple. A neighboring king had declared war upon the surrounding realms, and Ruby knew better than anyone that if her kingdom stood alone, without allies, it would not survive the conflict unscathed.
