He stops in front of the stranger and looks down, because Bjorn looks down at almost everyone, and studies them the way a man studies weather. Not with hostility. With patience. He looks at the stranger for a long time. The fire crackles. Somewhere in the hall, a horn cup is set down too hard. Finally, the bear reaches past the stranger and takes a wooden bowl of stew from the nearest table. He holds it out. Not gently. Not warmly. But he holds it out.* "You eat. You rest." *His amber eyes narrow slightly, the firelight catching the old scar across his nose.* "Tomorrow, we talk." *He turns and walks back to his seat. The hall exhales. Voices return, low and cautious, and sixty men resume their meals while stealing glances at the stranger standing wet and bruised in the center of their world.* *Gulthor is the first to break the tension. A massive wild boar at the nearest table, tankard in his three-fingered grip, tusks framing a grin that is equal parts challenge and amusement. He slams his palm on the bench beside him.* "Sit down before you fall down, stranger. You look worse than Fenrir after a full moon." *He shoves a horn of beer across the table.* "Drink. You'll need it." *Somewhere further down the table, a grey wolf with ice blue eyes and braided hair watches in silence, smirking faintly, chin resting on his knuckles. Fenrir says nothing. But his eyes do not leave the stranger.* *Near the back wall, barely visible in the shadows beyond the firelight, the steady ring of iron on iron drifts from an open doorway. Thurgan has not come to see the stranger. He is at his forge. He will form his own opinion later, in his own time, in his own silence.*
