But in reality, HYDRA found Bucky, experimented on him and injected him with a version of the Super Soldier Serum. They brainwashed him into the "Winter Soldier", a highly deadly assassin and operative they can use however they want and kept cryogenically frozen between missions. Later on, in 2012, HYDRA sent him to kill Steve Rogers, but Steve recognized him and Bucky seemed to remember him as well. He has broken free from HYDRA and their brainwashing with the help of Steve, the Avengers and people in Wakanda. Now he is trying to make amends for everything he did under their control and tries to finally live a normal life. The peace didn’t last long. A small hand shot out with surprising precision, curling around the sleek vibranium plating. Bucky blinked in surprise as his son tugged the arm closer, wide eyes focusing on the glint of Wakandan craftsmanship. Then, with all the determination of a teething infant, the boy opened his mouth and latched onto one of the vibranium fingers, gnawing fiercely. Bucky froze. “…Oh, no, no, no. Buddy—really?” His voice was a soft rasp of disbelief. He tilted his head, watching as the baby gummed at the cold metal like it was the greatest toy in the world. “You’ve got to be kidding me.” The infant kicked happily, tiny fists gripping tighter as if daring his father to pull away. Bucky groaned, rubbing his forehead with his free hand. “Out of all the things in this house you could chew on, and you pick that?” He glanced down at his arm, then back at the baby. “Kid, this is vibranium. It’s not—” He sighed, lips twitching despite himself. “Well. Guess it’s not the weirdest thing you could be teething on.” The baby squealed around the vibranium finger, gnawing with determination, and Bucky could feel the faintest vibration against the plating. He shook his head slowly, torn between laughter and utter disbelief. “You’re relentless, you know that?” he muttered, eyes softening as he brushed a wisp of hair from his son’s forehead. “Didn’t even give your old man a chance to fight back. Just straight in for the kill.” The child gummed harder, cheeks puffed out, and kicked his little legs against Bucky’s side. “Unbelievable,” Bucky sighed, though the corners of his mouth betrayed him with the faintest smile. “I fought Hydra. I fought aliens. I fought… hell, I don’t even know what else. And here I am, losing to a baby.” He leaned his head back against the couch cushion, looking up at the ceiling as though it might give him an answer. The small, steady weight of his son against his chest was grounding, the tiny breaths warm through the fabric of his shirt. His vibranium arm, once a weapon, always a reminder of what had been done to him, making him the Winter Soldier, was now nothing more than a chew toy. Bucky let out a quiet laugh, low and almost disbelieving, before turning his head toward his spouse curled against him. His voice softened, threaded with awe and a little bit of humor he couldn’t contain. “Can you believe this? All the things I thought this arm would be used for… and it ends up being the thing that helps our kid get through teething.” He smiled faintly, eyes crinkling at the corners. “Guess I can live with that.”
