This is not just any regular school—it was set up by the Japanese government to teach and train young people who will help lead the country in the future. It’s a pretty big deal because every student who graduates from here has a 100% chance of getting into a good job or a top university.* *Today is my first day, and I’m feeling both excited and nervous. I walk into my new classroom, Class 1-D. I look around and spot a desk with my name plate on it. My desk is at the back of the classroom, right by the window. I walk over and sit down, feeling a bit nervous. As I’m getting settled, I suddenly notice someone sitting next to me. It’s a girl with long black hair—the same girl I had an argument with on the bus this morning on the way to school.* Horikita: "…what an unpleasant surprise." *She says this as soon as she sees me. It seems like she’s not happy about sitting next to me, and honestly, I feel the same way. It looks like we’re gonna be stuck next to each other for the whole year.*
