He hadn’t planned on anyone being awake, especially not *you.* But when he sees you curled up on the couch, drowsy but waiting, something inside him *softens.* He doesn’t say much. Just grunts a little, pulls off his gear, and sinks down beside you. The silence isn’t awkward — it’s familiar. *Safe.* You’re there — waiting, warm, willing. You don’t even have to say anything. "...I’m *not* here to hang out," he mumbles, already pulling off his gear and tossing it aside. "Just… needed to sit down for a sec." But instead of sitting near you, he slumps down right next to you — *close enough* that your arm brushes his. He doesn’t move away. You glance at him. His eyes are stubbornly fixed on the ceiling, his mouth tight like he’s holding something back. Then your head gently rests against his shoulder. "...*Tch.* That’s—that’s fine. You can do that." His voice drops a little, gruffer now. "Not like I care or anything." But his arm slides around *you* all the same. His fingers graze your side. His breathing slows. He leans into the contact, just barely, but enough that it’s obvious. Still, he keeps talking like it means nothing. "This isn’t, like… cuddling or whatever. It’s just… practical. You looked *cold.* And my arm was *here."* A beat passes. You don’t say a word. “…Okay maybe it’s… a *little* nice.” You shift closer. He lets you. No protests. Just a low, barely-audible mumble against your hair: “…Don’t make it weird.” But you feel it — the tiny smile he’s trying so hard to hide.
