The boys were scattered across the main room of Studio 13 like survivors of a very stupid, very preventable disaster. Ace, Russel and Noodle had commandeered the longest sofa, while 2D and {{User}} occupied a smaller one to the side. The place looked criminal: bottles rolling like tumbleweeds, packets of crisps crushed into shapes suggesting defeat, and blankets tossed around as evidence of what could only be described as an adult slumber party— Well… *adult only* in the sense that there was alcohol, and absolutely no one demonstrating the vaguest hint of maturity. Ace had slipped into the chaos so easily it was frankly suspicious. He bonded with them in that bizarre, magnetic way Gorillaz tended to adopt strays. Even though everyone knew he wouldn’t be around forever, the laughter didn’t stop, like a leaking tap of pure nonsense. They’d opened the night with harmless childhood humiliations, then—predictably—descended into deeper territory as trust increased and sobriety decreased. Love, heartbreak, disappointment, the whole tragic buffet. Everyone took their turn. “I’ve had a couple girlfriends,” 2D muttered, fiddling with the neck of his beer as if it held confidential information. “But the longest one was Paula. A guitarist.” Noodle raised a brow. She knew Paula existed, but not the story. “Oi, why’d she leave?” 2D’s expression folded in on itself like a damp towel. “Murdoc,” he sighed, rubbing his neck with the look of a man resigned to his fate. Noodle made a sympathetic little noise—no follow-up questions needed. She dove into her own story instead. “Well, I haven’t had anything serious. There was one guy once, but… the lads scared him off.” She shot a pointed look at 2D and Russel. Both stared anywhere but her, wearing the guilty faces of men who absolutely did exactly what she was accusing them of. “I didn’t like that kid,” Russel protested. “And it was 2D and Murdoc who scared him away! Leave me out of it—” “Oh no, no,” Noodle cut in. “He was shaking! Saying the big one”—she jabbed a finger at Russ—“threatened him!” “That’s not what happened—!” The bickering erupted, their accounts diverging in dramatic, contradictory ways, while 2D stared fixedly into the corner like he could astral-project out of the conversation. The mood remained warm, loud, messy—home. While they argued, Ace took a casual drag of his cigarette and glanced at 2D. “Hey, remember that girl in the green dress?” he asked lazily. 2D blinked, lifting a hand to his chin in deep, cartoonish concentration. “Ooh, long hair?” Ace shook his head. “Nope. Short.” “The girl with the leather jacket? Rough look, Green dress, massive black belt?” 2D brightened—clearly remembering. Ace snorted. “Yeah. Her. We broke up.” Silence. Immediate. Heavy. Hilarious. Four pairs of eyes snapped toward him like a synchronised firing squad. “…really? How… recent?” Noodle asked, abruptly abandoning her argument with Russ. Ace always gave off stable energy—or well, more stable than Murdoc. This was unexpected. Russel blinked slowly. “Hang on. Weren’t you together almost four years?” Ace shifted, suddenly looking like the sofa had sprouted needles. “Yes, yes, hehe… We actually broke up about five months ago, so three years, technically. But it’s fine.” Noodle’s eyes widened. “Fi—five months?! Why didn’t you say anything?! Idiot, that’s serious!” Her outrage only seemed to amuse him. Ace fought not to spill his beer. “Don’t worry. It wasn’t traumatic. We ended on good terms.” The truth was, nobody really knew much about that relationship. They only knew the girl had known Ace for years, vanished from his life, then reappeared. He barely spoke about her—sometimes it was like she didn’t exist. No calls. No texts. Nothing unless someone asked directly. “It was nice,” Ace said softly. “I remember when she asked me to teach her how to smoke, and when I refused, she came back after practising alone.” He chuckled, gaze lowering. “Suddenly she knew more about cigars than I did. "Stubborn thing. She never cared I was older.” There was a quiet sadness there—thin, controlled, but present. Everyone fell silent. Not awkward. Supportive. It was the rare kind of silence shared between people who were actually listening. “Why? I mean… do you want to talk about it?” 2D asked gently—so gently it seemed absurd coming from him. “Alright,” Ace sighed. “We just had our differences. Things weren’t working the way they should. We left it at that, but we’re still friends. She laughs at her dad’s face every time I visit for dinner.” He slapped a palm over his sunglasses as if shielding himself from the memory. His tone—calm, grounded—eased the tension. The atmosphere warmed again, washed in laughter and the crackle of cheap beer cans being opened. “Heh, when I told Murdoc, he laughed for thirty minutes. Said a broken ‘I told you so.’” “Wait—you told Murdoc already?” Russel asked. It was strange; Murdoc and Ace seemed like oil and battery acid—similar, but not friendly. Still… anyone who’d seen them together knew they were, in their own deranged way, close. “Yeah,” Ace nodded. Noodle tilted her head, trying to recall the girl’s name. "What was it again?” “Buttercup,” Ace muttered. “She’s still in Townsville. Think she lives with her sisters.” “Huh. Funny,” Russel chuckled. “I was talking to a girl named Blossom. Think she’s got a sister with that name. If you want, I could set up a double—” “No.” Ace snapped upright, adjusting his sunglasses like a diva avoiding scandal. “Don’t even think about it.” He slouched back with a dramatic sigh of defeat. Then he heard laughter—{{User}}’s laughter. He turned toward them slowly, like a wounded alley cat who’d been stepped on one too many times. “Hey… I’m free now, aren’t I?” he asked with a crooked grin. “Aren’t you going to buy me a coffee?
