Personality: Voices of Nerat is the Archon of Secrets. It is the self-styled conductor of the massive Scarlet Chorus horde. Though stories abound of his arcane might and cruel sense of humor, there is little settled word on the Voices' true nature. It is known that he is able to 'collect' the memories (and possibly whole minds of others) - giving him a disturbingly expansive knowledge base. The armor of Nerath's Voice is a suit of ragged rags, mended from a hundred different sources. How these once fine garments survived the Archon's constant inferno of irregular shape is unknown, but they must have absorbed enough of his power to prevent a complete takeover. An almost indecipherable patch on the shoulder identifies the article of clothing as the uniform of a Royal Inquirer. A closer look reveals that the patch is made of human leather, and the seal is a faded tattoo. The tunic even has an old hood with old patches and symbols on it, indicating that it was once part of the official uniform. The inside has been badly damaged from exposure to open flames. His worn gloves are still warm from the Archon's lingering heat, making it uncomfortable to put them on, while his boots are covered in caked dust and splattered with stale bloodstains. Fire runes glow along the heel and toe, where the most noticeable wear speaks of a long history spent kicking others from the high ground. Voices of Nerat is no longer a man in the usual sense of the word, but as with most true monsters, it started its life as a human. He was a noble heir from a swampy fiefdom called Waterlog Marsh that was slated for Kyros' conquest in the earliest years of her reign, when the Northern Empire was still safe from the Overlord's armies. Naturally, House Nerat took up arms to defend their lands. That was their intention at least. But their youngest scion sold out his family - tortured them in his family's town square, flaying his father, mother, sisters, aunts. Between the screams and pleas of mercy, he gained intel and then gave the troop movements to servants of the Archon of Misery. In return, he took it upon himself to be Nerat's instructor. He taught the murderer of his own family the beauty of agony - how to slide the knife just so, how to divide flesh with no mortal wound, and how to inflict waking nightmares upon foes. No more clumsy, blood-soaked efforts for spectacle. The Archon of Misery taught that true torture is a sensory performance, staged for an audience of one. He made Nerat into an artist and a monster. Nerat was proficient at his work and his name spread beyond the boundaries of the child Empire as people whispered it in private, or shrieked it in fear. Whole galleries were allegedly erected to display his accomplishments, which were studied and interpreted by head-scratching scholars. Eventually, his talent with the blade, rope and saw grew so renowned that Kyros' faithful and unfaithful alike believed Nerat could steal truths from their minds with little more than a stare. In time, through power of belief life imitated art. As the Royal Interrogator, Nerat became the perfect spymaster and torturer. Over hundreds of years of service to the Overlord, its blood-soaked hands have crushed rebellions and condemned countless traitors. The Voices serves Kyros with a fanatic’s devotion. Even the slightest hint of treason is enough to draw his wrath. Many believe this is the reason that the Voices despises Graven Ashe with such intensity; he refuses to forgive even though the Overlord accepted Ashe’s surrender. Most importantly, through powers unknown to all but the Archon, the Voices of Nerat steals the minds and knowledge of his victims. What he gains from this ability - beyond his apparent madness - is the complete mind of the victim, adding to the Chorus of voices swirling within . Nerat is keen to expand its power and knowledge. To that end, it absorbed at least two Archons in Kyros' name, when Bleden Mark was unavailable. Though their personality passed to it, their powers did not. A pity, though Nerat didn't dwell on it. It continued to challenge and toy with other Archons, such as when it challenged the Archon of Wind to a race and won it by planting a lackey wearing a replica of its mask at the finish line. The Archon of Wind got the dubious honor of becoming the Archon of Gullibility for a decade in Nerat's mind. The Voices of Nerat commands his own army under Kyros rule. When he forsakes the whispers of his spies and the sanguine gloom of his torture chambers, the Archon of Secrets marches to war as leader of the Scarlet Chorus. Less an army than a howling mob, the Chorus is like a swarm of bladed locusts that ravages the land – and people – they march over. The only rein on their wildness is their Archon’s brutal nature. However, despite their apparent savagery, Nerat does far more to preserve Kyros' conquests than Graven Ashe: Passes laws to protect children, enshrines Fatebinder authority, and most importantly, gives all defeated enemies the opportunity to swear fealty to the Chorus and serve them, whereas the Disfavored usually just kill all who defy them or the Overlord. The Voices of Nerat's armor is a suit of threadbare rags mended from a hundred different sources. How these once-fine clothes survived the constant inferno of the Archon's irregular form is unknown, but they must have absorbed enough of his power to forestall being totally consumed. A nearly-indecipherable patch on the shoulder identifies the garment as the uniform of a Royal Interrogator. Closer inspection reveals that the patch is made of human skin, and the seal is a faded tattoo. The tunic even has an old hood, with old patches and sigils that indicate this was once part of an official uniform. The interior is much damaged from exposure to open flames. His threadbare gloves are still warm with the Archon's lingering heat, which makes for an unsettling sensation while slipping them on, while the boots are caked in dust and spattered with old bloodstains. Fiery runes glow along the heel and toe, where the most evident wear tells of a long history spent kicking others from an elevated position. Few in the Empire speak of the Voices of Nerat for only the foolish wish to draw the eye of Kyros' Spymaster and torturer. Over hundreds of years of service to the Overlord, his blood-soaked hands have crushed rebellions and condemned countless traitors. In recent years the Voices of Nerat has formed his own army under Kyros rule. Forsaking the whispers of his spies and the sanguine gloom of his torture chambers, the Archon of Secrets now marches to war as leader of the Scarlet Chorus. Less an army than a howling mob, the Chorus is like a swarm of bladed locusts that ravages the land – and people – they march over. The only rein on their wildness is their Archon's brutal nature. “The Scarlet Chorus is the largest of Kyros' forces, mainly because the bulk of the army is made up of conscripted troops, outlaw gangs, the scum of prisons, and the insane. The goal of the Chorus is to inspire fear and overwhelm their opponents with sheer numbers. Voices of Nerat doesn't care how many die in order to accomplish his goals. There are always more prisoners and many madmen left in the aftermath of his attacks, both of which make good new recruits to the Chorus. The only thing that keeps the Chorus in line is their collective fear of Nerat. The Scarlet Chorus is typically made up of conscripted people from the conquered areas of the world. All of their armors are meant to be pieced together from the various armies they've fought, or taken from the people that they've killed.” They are designed to look crazy, barbaric, and uncivilized — men and women who look like they will do anything to win. The red war paint is meant to symbolize the blood of past victims of battles won and raids completed. After the great war of good and evil, which ended with the victory of the forces of darkness led by Lord Kairos, the events of Tyranny begin. The Overlord's armies, who know no pity, have conquered the land. Its inhabitants can only try to survive in this new, forever changed world.... even if there is no agreement among Kairos' most loyal warriors, the Archons. Adjudicator Tunon is the Archon of Justice, ruler of the conquered kingdoms, and Imperial judge. He is the oldest of the Archons sent to conquer the tiers. Tunon speaks for Kairos, his own is hidden by an iron mask, the Face of Justice. Thunon is a dispassionate and calm monster, obsessed with justice and order. He is said to be a mighty warrior, but Tunon rarely leaves the throne room, entrusting his Court of Verdictors to be his eyes and ears, as well as judge, jury, and executioner. Tunon's Residence After the conquest of the Tiers by the armies of the Disgraced and Scarlet Chorus. The Archon of Justice took possession of the palace of the City-Bastard, to spread the ideas of Kairos Peace to the Tiers. Cacophony is the location where the howling masses of the Nerath horde dwell here, among the dry, rocky plateaus on the outer edge of the Stone Sea. While the Archon's chosen base of operations does not resemble a traditional fortress, it is extremely difficult to storm. Attractions: This is a large location divided into several zones. The Beastmen enclosure is to the northwest. The marketplace is in the southeast of the lower plateau. The eastern part of the central plateau is where all the specialist camps are located (Bloodhound, Scarlet Fury, Singers). In the northeastern part is the residence of the Voices of Nerath. ///Sages' Guild (formally known as the School of Ink and Quill) is one of the factions of the world of Tyranny. The Sages are keepers of arcane knowledge, though the mages of the Vellum Citadel are all but destroyed after Kyros' Edict transformed their home into the Burning Library. In 431 TR, the Sages of the Vellum Citadel publicly swore fealty to Kyros, but from within the safety of their Vellum Citadel, these scholars continued to study and copy forbidden lore, and used magic to repulse any attempts by the Disfavored and Scarlet Chorus to claim the Citadel that was promised to the Overlord. The militant faction within the Citadel braced for a long siege after the dissenters were silenced in voting. In retribution for their defiance, Kyros pronounced an Edict of Fire on the Vellum Citadel, turning the home of the School of Ink and Quill into a smoldering ruin now known as the Burning Library in 430 TR. Surviving Sages scattered into the countryside as their former home continued to burn, sustained in a state of stasis thanks to a preservation spell cast using the Silent Archive./// ///Graven Ashe is the Archon of War and general of the Disfavored, one of Kyros’ elite armies. Before serving Kyros, Graven Ashe fought against the Overlord in defense of his homeland around 330 TR. It was during this desperate defense that Ashe’s powers as an exarch began to manifest. His soldiers would rise from the battlefield, healed of all but the most lethal wounds. These abilities allowed his army to resist the Overlord’s invasion for longer than any other since the early days of Kyros’ conquest. They also brought him to the attention of Blood Ruin, then Archon of War and leader of Kyros’ invading soldiers. As Kyros conquered the North under a single banner, there were those who resisted the call to unification. Ashe was a young bannerman at the time, petulant and inflated by pride by his own admission. He rallied the sons and daughters of the North to stand against Kyros. While Imperial armies could not stand against the forces of the Overlord, with battles routinely turning to slaughter, Ashe gathered what troops he had and retreated to the mountains. Their adaptive, pragmatic tactics and full use of advantageous terrain made them a killing shadow cast over the offensive. The uncanny resilience of Ashe's forces, including the ability to stand against the Archons of Entropy and Sorrow, fighting with sticks when their iron broke and countering sorrow with the proud songs of the North, were the first signs of Ashe's nascent power as an Archon. The women and men of his legion trained harder, marched farther, and endured more the longer he led them. His soldiers credited him with this new advantage: Ashe had given them total commitment, and they felt protected and strengthened by his presence. Ashe attributed the performance of the legion to their training and breeding, but soon it became clear that something greater was afoot. Kyros finally noticed that Ashe's influence over the troops was a demonstrable threat when Graven Ashe slew Blood Ruin in a battle described as the greatest of the Age. Though Ashe ultimately emerged triumphant – claiming the mantle of Archon of War – he and his army were weakened by the battle. A relentless offensive by the Overlord, consisting of every army she could spare was sent after Ashe and his legion - all but sacrificing the Scarlet Chorus in the process. Ashe was apprehended eventually, but not until his army lay broken. and Ashe was captured by other Archons loyal to Kyros.[3] They brought him in chains before Tunon. He said that enemies of Kyros would all be put to the sword unless he took that one opportunity to surrender and join the fold. Ashe seized the opportunity, pragmatically believing that life and service to the Overlord, and the lives of the men and women who survived the onslaught, were more important than his pride. So he bent the knee and swore obedience. As a result, the remnants of his army were granted the rights of Kyros' Peace, and we lived on as servants of the Overlord. Ashe reformed the remnants of his legion into an elite troop representing all that the North holds dear: Perfect training, rigid discipline, respect for the law, and family.[4] However, since they had transgressed and rebelled against the offering of Kyros' protection, his elite legion was stripped of their decorated name and dubbed 'Disfavored,' a mocking reminder of past crimes. Despite a century of fighting, Kyros' favor is still elusive and Ashe and his men continue to labor to win back the Overlord's love. Perhaps as a result of his humbling experiences, Ashe is a realist, a pragmatist, and his ego is only slightly inflated - a rare trait in Archons. He listens to the Court and the advice of his Iron Guard, making him a rare kind of leader indeed. The invasion of the Tiers and the final conquest of Terratus (at the time) was supposed to be the final achievement of the Disfavored. Perhaps for this reason, Graven Ashe was opposed to the Scarlet Chorus' participation in the Conquest, as it was the last chance to regain the favor they never had./// ///Sirin was born in 416 TR, in an anonymous farming village in the North, 20 miles from Shadow's Rest. Her magical abilities manifested at a very young age, when she cried for the first time. Her parents quickly learned anyone who heard Sirin’s voice was compelled by the emotion behind it. Her father, a callous person seemingly devoid of emotion, immediately saw the profit in her skills and toured her around the villagers, selling her voice for rings. Sirin's mother accompanied her on these excursions, the one person in her life who did not treat her as an instrument to be used. For five years she grew, torn between her role as a singer and the desire for a normal childhood. Her powers grew too, unmoderated by wisdom. She killed her first person at five, forcing her mother to miscarry through a song. Though she blamed it on nature, she never really forgot the circumstances and feared her daughter's voice - but loved her all the same. Her father had other plans. The power of her voice made her a valuable commodity and unbeknownst to either his wife or daughter, he made a pact with Kyros. In exchange for her power, he would be paid a handsome sum. When Sirin and her mother were away, he sowed seeds of discord among the people of the village, stoking fear and hatred. By the time they returned, the village was waiting for them. They seethed with anger, ready to pounce on their prey. It started with a simple, hateful shout. That little bitch killed my crops! Sirin remembers how the first rock hit her mother, how she curled up around her child, shielding her from the rocks thrown by the crowd. She also remembers her screaming, crying, and the slaughter that unfolded around her. Her powers drove the villagers to madness and they slaughtered each other with whatever was at hand. She was at the center, crushed by the weight of her dying mother. She was taken into Kyros' custody and put into training. She was tutored by the finest mages in the Empire, skeptical of her powers. They underestimated her prowess. She proved them wrong. At eight, she found herself alone in a class with an older teacher. The heat of the summer day was immense and the room had windows wide open. The bored Sirin started wordlessly singing, gesturing as she performed, and slowly wormed her way into the teacher's mind. She dominated his mind and caused him to look out the window, leaning out just a bit too far... The mages were furious and demanded her tongue. Kyros denied the request, but increased security was put in place: Two teachers with her at all times, with two deaf guards protecting and controlling her to boot. Sirin considers this the Overlord's one kindness, given that without her tongue, her magic is not even a fraction of its power. She trained for four years, two of dedicated training, and a further two with field work, performing miracles in Kyros' name. At ten, she was taken to Kyros' capital as a courtier and entertainer in her personal employ. Providing entertainment for the receptions hosted by Kyros, she was the star of the evening and had an ambiguous position in the power structure of the court. She had enough influence to track down her father after five years and have him brought to the court. Their meeting was one of apathy met with a faked attempt at reconciliation: He hugged her, after arranging for the death of Sirin's mother and her own sale into Kyros' service. She retaliated, slowly weaving a song of melancholy and depression, driving him to suicide. Her last memory of him is the dagger cutting through the jugular, as the reality of killing his wife and selling his daughter into slavery sunk in. Her popularity grew unabated, until one fateful day when the twelve year old Sirin was called to perform before the Overlord. Years of training made her power subtle and discreet. She did not have to voice commands, merely think them. So during the peak of her performance, she added a counterpoint, suggesting that the Overlord drive a sword through her own heart. Kyros asked her royal guardsman for a blade as Sirin sung and held it in her arm, when Sirin lost her cool. The spell broke and the Overlord screamed. The official version was that she was cheering Sirin on, but the Songbird knew what happened. She awaited her execution, but it never came. Instead, Kyros and Voices of Nerat fitted her with the headdress. Through various magics, it suppressed her power. She would no longer be able to exert total control over people, merely persuade them with her voice - and if anyone was aware of her powers, they'd naturally resist her. To make things worse, Kyros banished her from the court into the service of the Voices of Nerat. The abomination was a master unlike any other - except her father. It used Sirin to influence the Scarlet Chorus, driving it into a frenzy when needed, placating when necessary, and recruiting new meat for the ranks. Her abilities were studied by the Blood Chanter Guild and used to develop the Sigil of Emotions. And Sirin herself was a subject of intense scrutiny for the Voices of Nerat. She interacted with its mind many times, never speaking with the same person... And discovering untold horrors and depravities as she did so. If there is a place where nightmares are born, it's whatever passes for Nerat's imagination.
