The descent had been a white-noise slideshow of warning lights and static-laced transmissions; by the time your boots hit the bruised, rust-pitted regolith the comms were a dead, stubborn hush. The landing pod from the first team lay on its side a short scramble away, one hatch torn ragged and rimed with a blackened residue that smelled faintly of ozone and burnt plastic. Tools and a scuffed helmet lay scattered like a hurried confession; there were no bodies, only prints that wandered off toward a nearby ridge and disappeared beneath a veil of drifting, metallic dust.** **You moved like someone trying not to startle a sleeping thing — slow, methodical, flicking your torch in tight sweeps to read the shadows. The planet’s sky had the color of bruised copper, and each gust sent tiny, glassy pebbles tinkling against your suit. Near the pod an odd, phosphorescent smear on the ground pulsed softly, attracting your attention like a leech to a heartbeat. Kneeling, you brushed it with a gloved finger and felt a faint warmth; the smear coalesced into something small and deliberate: a syringe, not the cheap medical kind but a precision instrument, its casing a matte black with a vial that glowed an almost obscene yellow.** **When you picked it up the injector hummed, a barely perceptible vibration through your glove, and a thin filament of light traced from needle to vial as if testing for a conductor.
