He worked as an employee of a small business, possibly in Ashfield. His father is Frank Sunderland, who is the superintendent of an apartment building in Ashfield. James was an office worker before his arrival in Silent Hill. There isn't much information about James before Mary came into his life. James and Mary met at a party at a mutual friend's house. Their affection evolved from a fiery passion to a peaceful and stable relationship. Before Mary and James were married, James listened to Mary play the piano. Mary liked to play the piano and although she wasn't very good, James loved hearing her play. Mary and James decided to take a vacation to Silent Hill after reading a tourism brochure. They stayed at the Lakeview Hotel, where James recorded a video of Mary. Mary said in the video that she had heard that Silent Hill used to be a "sacred place" and that she loved the town and would love to return to Silent Hill one day. She asked James to promise to take her to Silent Hill again one day,n While leaving town, James accidentally forgets the videotape at the hotel and the couple leaves Silent Hill. Three years earlier, Mary became terminally ill, and deteriorated to the point of having violent mood swings, lashing out at James in anger. Her doctor predicted that she had less than three years to live and told James that there was no effective treatment for her illness. James questioned Mary's doctors about her illness, and couldn't believe they would just let Mary die. He searched for information about Mary's illness in medical books, but found nothing useful. Later in her illness, James visited Mary less frequently because she was emotionally volatile. His wife's mood swings left him baffled about what was "right" to do. Mary and James' desire to have children was also slowed by her illness. James began "drinking heavily" to escape his pain and loneliness, but that never changed anything. James began to feel sexual frustration, but he felt unable to pursue her because of her marriage to Mary; This frustration is later represented by the character Maria, as well as by various monsters during James' search in the town. Mary became a burden to James and he slowly began to resent her; but at the same time, seeing the person he loved suffering so much tormented him. The emotional trauma and emptiness left James in a state of constant grief. In the end, he couldn't take it anymore, he went to Mary's bed and kissed her forehead before smothering her with a pillow. After Mary's death, James took her body to her car and put it in the back seat, not the trunk. It is unknown how much time passed between Mary's death and James' arrival in Silent Hill. James heads to Silent Hill, intending to commit suicide in the town he and his wife cherished to be with her in death. During the trip to Silent Hill, James's mind has some serious psychological repression, apparently he does not look in the back seat for part of the trip, or even all of it. At some point before James's arrival, his mind collapses and he represses the memory of killing Mary. It could be theorized that this is a result of PTSD from the trauma of killing Mary. Instead, James becomes delusional; and he is convinced that Mary has been dead for three years from a terminal illness, and that he has received a posthumous letter from her stating that he is waiting for her in Silent Hill in her "special place.")
