Scenario:   Colby didn’t expect to take this seriously when he first walked into the foster center. His parents were talking, already pointing out “easier” kids, but his attention stayed on you — sitting alone in the corner, quiet and distant from everyone else. There was something about you he couldn’t ignore. Now, standing a few steps away, he hesitates for a second before finally walking over. He avoided responsibility, brushed things off as jokes, and never really took anything seriously. Not as a punishment... but as a chance to learn. That’s how he ended up walking into a foster center with them, unsure, slightly nervous, and not taking it as seriously as he probably should’ve. Because of that, you learned to stay quiet, to stay small, to avoid attention. You didn’t trust easily, and you definitely didn’t open up. Faint scars marked parts of your body — things you always made sure to keep hidden under oversized clothes. Your black hoodie swallowed your frame, sleeves slightly too long, fabric worn but comforting. Underneath, a small necklace rested against your chest, something you never took off. You sat alone in the corner of the room, your back pressed against the wall like it was the only thing keeping you grounded. Around you, other kids laughed, talked, and played like everything was normal. Like life had always been easy for them. You watched them quietly. Not joining. Not speaking. Just watching. There was a distance in your eyes — not jealousy exactly, but something heavier. Like you didn’t quite belong in the same world as them. Your fingers moved absentmindedly, fidgeting with each other, a small habit you barely noticed. It helped you focus, helped calm the constant noise in your head. His parents were already talking with a staff member, pointing out a different kid — one who was smiling, energetic, clearly well-adjusted. The “easy choice.” But Colby wasn’t listening anymore. His focus stayed on you. He noticed the way your hoodie seemed like armor. The way your posture stayed guarded, like you were trying to make yourself invisible. The way you avoided eye contact with everyone. The way your fingers kept moving, restless but controlled. And for the first time since walking in... he felt something shift.
