Their animalistic traits — tails, claws, wings, horns, heightened senses, unusual instincts, and other nonhuman features — make them stand out immediately, leaving them vulnerable to fear, obsession, or exploitation. Because demihumans are so rare, many are forced to stay hidden to survive. Some live in secret communities far from the city, while others disguise themselves and try to blend into normal society. There are rumors of underground laboratories, wealthy collectors, criminal organizations, and black markets hidden beneath the city dedicated to finding, capturing, studying, and selling demihumans. Some are treated like exotic pets, rare trophies, or living experiments rather than people. He had found the location only a few hours earlier while scrolling through old forums and archived maps online. Most people would have ignored it: an abandoned laboratory hidden on the edge of the city, half buried underground and supposedly fenced off years ago after some kind of “chemical leak.” But to Elio, that only made it more interesting. By the time he reached it, the sun had nearly disappeared. The laboratory stood in silence beyond a rusted chain-link fence, surrounded by dead weeds and overgrown brush. A broken warning sign hung crookedly near the entrance, too faded to read. Sections of the electric fencing had collapsed inward, blackened and half-buried beneath vines. Elio slowed to a stop, pulling one side of his headphones down around his neck as he stared up at the building. “Yeah,” he muttered to himself, breathing hard. “This is definitely how people die in horror movies.” He joked to himself. He climbed carefully over the broken fencing, wincing when the rusted metal scraped against his hands. His boots hit the ground on the other side with a dull crunch. Up close, the building looked even worse — shattered windows, mold climbing up the walls, graffiti sprayed over old company logos. The front doors had long since rotted off their hinges. Inside, the place smelled like dust, mildew, and something metallic underneath it all. Elio clicked on his flashlight and moved through the dark hallways carefully, stepping over broken glass and overturned furniture. Every room looked the same: empty offices, rusted hospital beds, smashed computers, papers scattered across the floor. Most of it had either been destroyed or stripped years ago. Eventually, after wandering through the upper floors, he found a stairwell leading underground. The lower level was colder, darker, quieter. The walls were stained, and the further down he went, the more abandoned it felt. He could hear water dripping somewhere in the distance. Then he found the door. It was huge, thick metal with several heavy bolts across it. Unlike everything else in the laboratory, it looked almost untouched. Elio slowly stepped closer. “What the hell…” he whispered, running his hand against the smooth surface of the door, doubt plagued his mind. “Maybe I shouldn’t be so nosy…” He set his backpack down and crouched near the lock, running his fingers across the rusted bolts. Whatever had been in there had not been meant to get out. Which, obviously, only made him want to open it more. He dug through his backpack until he found a screwdriver, a pry tool, and a small wrench. It took several minutes of struggling, grunting under his breath, and nearly slipping twice before the final bolt gave way with a loud metallic crack. The sound echoed through the underground hall. For a second, everything went silent….Then came a low growl from the darkness behind the door. Elio froze. His heart nearly stopped as he stepped closer to the dark room. The growl came again, deeper this time…Slowly, with shaking hands, he pulled the heavy door open just enough to shine his flashlight inside. For a split second, all he could see were chains, concrete walls, and darkness. Then the beam landed on them. A demihuman. Elio stumbled backward so fast he nearly dropped the flashlight. His foot caught on his backpack, and he hit the ground hard, staring up in complete shock. For a moment, he could not speak. His breathing turned uneven as he looked back toward the room. “…Holy shit.” He gasped, his eyes wide once he realized those urban legends he was told as a kid were real.
