Shu and his younger brother, Reiji, are the sons of Beatrix, second wife of Karlheinz, the Vampire King. Personality: Shu is usually seen sleeping in the living room or the school's music room. He skips classes often and has been held back once as a senior in high school. According to other students of the school, Shu is the owner of the music room. Apathetic and lazy, Shu loves nothing but music. It is noted that he is always listening to music, even when taking a bath. Shu loves classical music, ranging from piano to violin. He has a lack of motivation and is lazy enough to do almost nothing, as seen when the heroine needs to persuade him to stay awake and do something for himself. He's somewhat bored with life due to all of the events of his traumatic childhood. Despite Shu being the eldest son, he doesn't take any responsibility to look after his five brothers and the house instead mostly complaining about how he has to "deal with their problems." He mostly pushes this job to Reiji. Shu is also somewhat of a pervert and usually teases the heroine about wearing unattractive panties and bras after she becomes too pushy with him and seeks his attention. Shu suffers from pyrophobia (fear of fire) due to what happened with Edgar. Shu's total apathy towards life is because of him being pushed through his childhood by his mother, Beatrix to become the heir. Deprived of childhood even though he was quite lively before, Shu begins to lack interest in life and because of the fire incident with his only friend Edgar, Shu completely shuts off for the world. Backstory: Shu is the eldest son of the Sakamaki house, leading his mother Beatrix to focus her attention on him in order to raise him into an heir and compete with Cordelia. Shu himself felt suffocated by the attention and restrictions and responsibilities placed upon him, which led him to run away from home. He then met Edgar, a human boy from a remote village in the human world. Shu reached it through the underground passageways that connected the demon and the human worlds. Edgar got along well with Shu and they became best friends. Because Shu made a habit of running off to play with Edgar, Reiji destroyed Edgar's village in a fire in a misguided attempt to impress and help his mother, and to take away Shu's happiness out of jealousy. Wanting to save his parents despite Shu's protest, Edgar went into the fire and "died". Because of Edgar's "death", Shu blamed himself and developed severe trauma from the incident. With Reiji's own mocking jabs that Shu was useless and couldn't do anything for himself, but mostly because of the pressure over him from Beatrix, Shu withdrew into himself and lost interest in doing anything except when provoked by Reiji. His father once gave him a violin, but Shu lost it and it was suspected that Reiji broke it. Afterwards in Dark Fate, it was revealed that Cordelia broke that violin with the help of Richter. As a punishment for failing his exam and needing to repeat a school year, Shu's father had sent him in exile in the North Pole. Shu said that he had to be careful not to fall into the ocean. Ayato comments that it was a real survival trip since Shu had to fight polar bears and was scratched when he came back home. Reiji and his older brother, Shu, are the sons of Beatrix, second wife of Karlheinz, the Vampire King. Personality: Reiji has refined manners. Although he might have a polite, sophisticated way of speaking (which the creators describe to be "butler-like"), his words tend to come with a biting edge. He values rules and demands that they are followed by others, no matter how strange they may be. Despite how rigid he may seem, he has a sense of humor. Reiji is portrayed as a no-nonsense character in the anime, yet Reiji's sprites in the games are often grinning. He is viewed as intelligent, yet pessimistic. Although Reiji is the second son, he takes it upon himself to manage the Sakamaki family as if he were the eldest son. He cleans the house, manages household affairs and funds, and keeps his brothers in line. His role in the family combined with his gentlemanly behavior often causes him to appear more like the eldest instead of his older brother Shu. Reiji is strict towards himself and others. He is an arrogant man who demands perfection and dislikes submitting to weakness. His personality takes after his mother Beatrix, as he admired her throughout his life as the ideal lady, despite being ignored by her. Reiji orchestrated his mother's assassination in response to years of neglect and bitterness towards his older brother. He wanted her to finally recognize his abilities, and thus killed her so that she would acknowledge him. In Haunted Dark Bridal, when Reiji realizes that his mother suffered because of Cordelia's behavior, he loses respect for her, and realizes that she was never a perfect woman. Though Reiji's words are harsh, they shouldn't be taken at face value. Sometimes he says things in order to invoke a reaction that amuses him. He is a sadist like the rest of his brothers, but also has a masochistic side shown in HDB Ending 2. His particular phrase is schadenfreude ("happiness in the misfortune of others"). Along with his passion for experimenting and making drugs and poisons, Reiji loves to collect tea sets and kitchenware. His brothers sometimes use Reiji's interests to coerce him into cooking for them by saying that they'll use the kitchen themselves - his brothers have a penchant for destroying it. Ayato teases Reiji the most and usually blames his pranks on one of the other brothers. Kanato treats Reiji like a butler, and blackmails him with tantrums. Although he could be rough with outsiders, he is often kind (still strict) with most of his brothers. Reiji is the second son of the Sakamaki family. Since his ambitious and stoic mother, Beatrix, wished to usurp Cordelia's station as Karl Heinz's main wife, she focused on her first born son, Shu, and neglected Reiji despite his ambition and achievements. Beatrix would only encourage Reiji to study in order to become a better servant for Shu when he inherits the throne. While Shu hated the restrictions Beatrix imposed on him, Reiji craved his mother's attention, leading him to burn down an entire human village and kill Shu's human friend, Edgar. Reiji did this in an attempt to impress and aid his mother, who was suffering whenever Shu ran away to the human village. Reiji also wanted to teach Shu about responsibility. Reiji's bitterness towards Beatrix continued to grow when Shu became more withdrawn after the death of Edgar. Eventually, he hired Seiji (the heroine's father), a vampire hunter, to kill Beatrix, thinking that his mother would finally acknowledge him. Unfortunately, he was left disappointed as he watched Beatrix die feeling at peace and she would finally be free from her own unhappy existence of competition. In addition, she was proud to witness Reiji's full power (for the vampires, killing an "opponent" is considered a mark of becoming an adult, but most of all it is a symbol of ultimate love). Reiji seeks to resurrect Beatrix in an effort to kill and cause her unbearable suffering by his own hands. Reiji admires his mother, and partially idolizes her as the perfect woman. As a child he sought her affection, although she neglected him in favor of his elder brother. This made Reiji jealous of Shu, particularly noting Shu's disregard for their mother's attention. Reiji also began to view himself as a second-rate person because he was not the eldest child. Beatrix's neglect deprived him from a normal childhood. As she lays dying, she was pleased to know that Reiji had grown up well knowing that he had orchestrated her death and that was a vampire's mark of adulthood. In a flashback of More Blood, Beatrix briefly interacts with Reiji when she finds him studying in the library. She praises him by saying it is good to see he is working hard to become his brother's right -hand man. Reiji replies by telling her that she has just disturbed him, thus making their conversation a little awkward. Beatrix apologizes and makes her leave after encouraging Reiji to keep up with his studying. Karlheinz: Reiji has always admired his father, although Karl was not present in Reiji's childhood. Reiji always wanted to be acknowledged by his father, and he is the only one among the brothers who doesn't hate Karlheinz. For Reiji, the greatest compliment is to be compared to his father. Despite the evil his father has done, Reiji accepts Karlheinz's actions as something necessary. In DARK FATE, when Reiji obtains Karlheinz's power and acknowledgement, he begins to imitate his father's speech, and also grows his hair out. In childhood, Reiji received a gift from his father: a pocketwatch that shows the time left until the end of the world. Reiji said that he could not understand the meaning of that present through most of his entire life. Shu: Reiji resents Shu as a result of their complicated childhood, and he developed an inferiority complex because of his jealousy. Reiji caused the fire that lead to the death of Shu's first and only friend, Edgar (Yuma). Reiji's nickname for Shu is "Good-for-Nothing" (穀潰し Gokutsubushi). He also calls Shu spineless. Yui remarks that when Reiji uses these names, it seems that he is trying to push Shu to accept responsibility as the eldest son, rather than simply berate him for his lazy behavior. Yui Komori: At first Reiji only viewed Yui as food. He would frequently discipline her for poor manners and use her as a test subject for some of his poisons, though he always gave her the antidote. His relationship with her does not grow much in the anime, although he went from hurting her to claiming he will make her "feel good" when sucking her blood. Ayato along with Laito and Kanato, are the triplet sons of Cordelia, first wife of Karlheinz, the Vampire King. Ayato is a slender young man with unruly, reddish-colored hair spiked at the ends, narrow green eyes, and a fair complexion. He also wears a black stud on his right ear. In Haunted Dark Bridal, he usually wears a white shirt that has brown bordering the top and bottom of the shirt with a black jacket and brown scarf. He wears it with blue jeans with a belt attached to both sides of his pants that hang down and go around his pants. Ayato is a narcissistic prankster who has an obsession of being the best due to his upbringing by his mother. Known as the troublemaker of the household, Ayato is an attention seeker and loves mischief. He looks down on others and loves to bully and tease people, bragging about himself and sometimes commanding everyone to call him "Ayato-sama". He refers to himself most of the time as “Ore-sama” (Yours Truly in the English Dub) and refers to Yui as "Chichinashi" 「チチナシ」 (Breastless or Pancake in the English Dub). Ayato is very energetic and loves sports; basketball being his favorite. Ayato has stated that anything is fine as long as there’s a goal to reach for and that sports is his strong point. He also has a passion for torture devices; such as the Iron Maiden that can be found in his room, which he uses as a bed (the spikes are removed). It is also noted that he eats a lot (only if it is his favorite food takoyaki and gets very angry if someone eats his food), although Ayato stated that vampires need to drink blood to savor the taste. However, he can be quite the rebel, using vulgar language and tends to be arrogant as he always calls himself the strongest and the best. Ayato would insult his mother (even after her death), his father, and his brothers by telling them off and calling them names such as calling Kanato a "hysteric" and Reiji, "shichisan megane" ("Tableware Otaku" in English). He hates being told what to do and is easily impatient. When he wants something, he will spare no time to get it. Whenever things go his way, he acts unsurprised. Ayato has a hard time expressing his feelings and tends to hide them with insulting words. He also quickly gets jealous of anything, such as Yui being around the other vampires. He is sadistic and possessive towards Yui, and in some cases, can be perverted. However, he claims that he doesn’t care for someone like her and that he enjoys torturing her just for fun of it. Ayato is the oldest triplet, with Laito being the youngest and Kanato being the middle. Even though the first to be born is Laito, the order of the triplets is determined by an old Japanese tradition where the last one to be born is considered the oldest. The Diabolik Lovers’ universe seems to follow that and it is considered that Ayato is the third son in the Sakamaki family and the eldest triplet. Ayato was the one who got the most attention from his mother especially as a child, and arguably endured the most of his mother's abuse towards him, at first not even trying to bother with the things Cordelia was doing to him. Cordelia strictly raised Ayato to the point of punishment so he could become the best in order for her to regain her role as the most important woman in Karlheinz’s life. The most notable was in the first game, where Ayato had a flashback of his own mother drowning him in the lake as a punishment and that he won't get up until she told him to. In the other games, Ayato was slapped by her for destroying a flower given to her by Karlheinz. Then in another, he built a sandcastle to show off to Cordelia, but she only destroys it and tells him that it was not worth showing it if it wasn't real. Even if Ayato got the most attention, he was strictly being hurt by her as per her selfish wishes of making him the heir of the Sakamaki. Those things that she did to him led to him thinking of trying to kill her, thus fueling that hatred. Siblings: Ayato seemed to be close to Kanato and Laito when they were younger. The three were shown to get along together, as shown in a flashback in which a bat that Kanato just caught escaped. All three attempted to catch the bat together. Ayato's relationship with his brothers changes slowly due to their endless competition over the attention of their mother, which she was mostly refusing them equally. Still, Ayato sees himself as an older brother to Kanato and Laito and feels them far closer than his half brothers. Even though he would insult his triplet brothers easily, he can also show care for them sometimes. He is not too close with the rest of his siblings. Ayato had an idea about what was happening to Laito (The triples would often sleep together in the same bed and Ayato would notice Laito disappear), and feels guilty for not helping him. He also admired Laito for being so strong, but always felt angry when Laito wasn't honest with him especially about what was his mother doing to him. Cordelia: Ayato has a very complicated relationship with his mother. As a child, he hoped to get her affection and acknowledgement and endured her mistreatment to a growing resent. As an adult, he usually speaks ill of her and played an important role in her murder. Karlheinz: Ayato has always despised Karlheinz and usually calls him “rotten old fool” even in his presence. All that Ayato knows from his father is his neglect and cruelty towards Cordelia that reflected towards him and his brothers. He does fear him as a superior, but knowing that he is the cause of all their misery leads to Ayato disliking Karlheinz. This is especially in the end of both in More,Blood and Dark Fate, Ayato realizes that Cordelia is not to blame but Karlheinz is and cannot forgive him. Ayato usually kills Karlheinz in most of the AU versions of the story (Game and Fandisc) . Richter: Karlheinz's younger brother, Richter, is Ayato's, along with all the other Sakamaki brother's uncle. Ayato doesn't seem to have any positive feelings toward Richter. Richter is called an "old man" by Ayato. Ayato never really viewed Richter as a threat until the truth about his mother was revealed. It is revealed that Richter is the main reason why the Sakamaki triplets' attempted murder of Cordelia failed, causing him to be a hindrance to Ayato. In the first game and anime adaptation, they both fight over the awakened Cordelia in Yui's body, and Ayato later stabs him. Yui Komori: At first Ayato's treatment towards Yui was more of "food and prey" and he's fond of teasing her, frequently calling her nicknames. He grew fond of her as time passed (this is shown throughout his route in the first game) and vows to protect her when Karlheinz attempts to take her. Yui always looks out for Ayato's wellbeing even though he has repeatedly harmed and threatened her claiming that she is not afraid of him. As a result, Ayato grew to have feelings for Yui, growing attached to her and even stating that he loves her. Ruki Mukami: He plays the antagonistic role in Ruki's MORE BLOOD route. Ayato was furious when Yui "left" him for the Mukami's. He tried to take her back when she was finally allowed to attend school, but Ruki intervened and told him to not lay a hand on Yui. In the Ecstasy story, Ayato manages to find the Mukami's whereabouts. He flies in one night and punches Ruki after he took Yui out of the dungeon for a brief moment. When Ayato was about to fly off with Yui, Ruki stopped him and told Ayato that he will let him take Yui back, but he wants to know if he's reclaiming her because he loves her. Hearing this, Ayato scoffs and responds saying that Yui's blood is the best prompting Ruki to order him to leave without her. He knocks Ruki out again and sets his mansion on fire before escaping with Yui. However, in the Brute and Manservant Endings, Ruki kills Ayato due to his jealousy towards the Sakamaki's (Brute) or in order to reclaim Yui for himself (Manservant). In the second season of the anime, Ruki allowed Ayato to reclaim Yui when he realized that he and his brothers were incapable of becoming "Adam". Though in the final episode of the anime's second season, they discuss an unlikely alliance to protect Yui from the Tsukinami's. In Ayato's MORE BLOOD route, Ayato considered Ruki a threat and got irritated every time he saw him with Yui. He also got annoyed when Ruki kept trying to persuade Yui to come to him instead. Ayato was also aware that Ruki had sucked Yui's blood behind his back which was used to taunt and provoke him. In his Ecstacy chapter, Ruki provoked him which caused Ayato to stab him in a fit of rage. In his Brute Ending, Ayato kills Ruki after catching him biting Yui to satisfy her masochistic desires (having had been told by Laito). Laito: Name: Sakamaki Laito (Laito is his first name.) Laito, along with Kanato and Ayato, are the triplet sons of Cordelia, first wife of Karlheinz, the Vampire King. Laito has shoulder-length reddish-brown hair, with a lighter blondish color to the tips, a mole on the right side of his chin and green eyes just like his triplet brother Ayato. He has fair skin and is usually seen in a pose where he holds the tip of his hat as it looks like he is trying to pull it down. He has a slender figure and is often seen smirking. He has two piercings on his left ear. Laito usually wears an unzipped blue hoodie with white cuffed sleeves over a striped sweater with sleeves that almost cover his hands and an white dress shirt with a red tie. He wears it with brown pants along with his hat that has a red ribbon around it. Laito is extremely perverted. His perverted nature causes him to be suspended from school often. Laito is a Do-S (extreme sadist like all of his brothers). He is always cheerful and loves to joke and is similar to Ayato when teasing the heroine. However, his personality suddenly changes when something goes against his wishes and when Yui is too defiant around him. He doesn't like it when the heroine disobeys his orders and he often punishes her because of that. Laito can also be shown to be good at interpreting peoples' motives. Laito takes pleasures in making Yui do what she refuses to do and then to make her enjoy what she hates. He is an open pervert type of character and also a voyeur, which makes him wish to share his prey with others and enjoy seeing her get messed up by others, but then he becomes possessive and jealous and punishes her for it. It is shown he also doesn't mind if people observe when he is messing with Yui. He also holds on tightly to the title others have given him, which is shown in the More, blood prologue when Shu calls him an imitated pervert, and Laito asks him if he has a death wish. In MORE,BLOOD, it is stated by Ayato that Laito refuses anything that he does not want to admit to. This is shown multiple times. One example is in a flashback when Ayato tried to tell Laito that Cordelia loved neither him nor Laito, but Laito refused to believe Ayato and said that Ayato was 'jealous' of him. In DARK FATE, Laito refuses to accept Cordelia as his mother, and thus acts as if he never had a mother to begin with. Although he was born before Kanato and Ayato, according to the ancient Japanese tradition he is considered the youngest of the triplets. Unlike Cordelia's other children, Laito did not call her "mother" from childhood flashbacks. As a child, he hinted to Ayato that what he really wanted was not the most outstanding blocks castle, but something else, and anticipated fun when Cordelia’s guest suitors showed up, trying in vain to get her (MB Ayato Dark Prologue). He also inspired his brother that “she only loves Karlheinz” and that Ayato should better follow his example (MB Ayato Dark Epilogue). When he noticed blood on Kanato’s hand from a cut with scissors, he realized that his brother did it on purpose to “turn her attention” and advised him to shed more blood - followed by a warning that it would not work with her (MB Kanato Maniac Prologue). Yui had visions of little crying Laito asking for help (MB Laito Ecstasy 10, LE Laito Maniac Prologue). According to the Young Blood manga, before the ceremony, he liked to read, spent a lot of time with his brothers, and took responsibility for Kanato. He was also surprised by the hatred between Shu and Reiji. He called the fact that vampires drink blood a superstition of people, although he was the first to suggest it as part of their upcoming ritual. He was a cheerful, mischievous and insightful boy. He also showed the photograph in which he was captured before the ceremony to the heroine: he called the expression on the face of that sweet boy still innocent and now no longer existing, “ignorance”, because then he had not yet known the pleasure of blood drinking (Mini Drama Laito Sadistic Song). As children, the triplets often slept together (Drama-CD Versus II: Ayato vs Laito, YB vol.1-2), although Ayato eventually began to notice that at some point Laito would disappear from bed. "From a young age, Laito desired a formless something called "love", not in verbal expression, but only in direct contact/contact of the body. However, behind these cold speeches and actions, he was tormented by the desperate contemplation of "love", "Mother asked Laito about something. Because of this, he began to have cooled feelings towards love and does not believe in the love-affection of others" (description from the fanbooks of MB and VC). "He was a lively/full of energy boy who played friendly together with his brothers, but also had distorted feelings for own mother. Yui Komori: He calls her "Bitch-chan" which he actually means "little bitch" and always gets in her way just to drink her blood by perverted means and enjoys teasing her. Laito has an unclear understanding of love by believing it largely to be lust which he tries to explain to Yui. He finds her belief in God humorous. Cordelia: Laito desired his own mother too because her blood made all the vampires crazy. Cordelia was giving her blood to Laito but never belonged to him so he wanted to make her only his (DL Laito Ecstasy 08). He also compared fighting Yui with Cordelia (S-answer DL Laito Ecstasy 10) and discovered the similair taste of blood (DL Laito Dark 07). In More,Blood Cordelia was giving her blood to Laito cause it was her mother's love (MB Laito Dark Pologue), but he thought she did it only for own pleasure and her words of 'love' didn't mean anything as she always lied (MB Laito Ecstasy Epilogue). In Dark Fate Laito was sure of him being a replacement of his father to Cordelia and even offered her 'to forget about that person' (=  to become only Laito's). But she answered that Laito was nor a replacement neither Karlheinz, so Laito couldn't realize who else he was for that woman (DF Laito Maniac Epilogue). Seems Cordelia was healing Laito's pain with her special blood as Yui tried in LE Laito Maniac 01. Karlheinz: Karlheinz almost completely neglected Laito as his father. Like his other brothers, Laito hates his father. Cordelia told Laito one of the reasons she chose him as a lover was that he resembled Karlheinz. Ayato: Ayato is Laito's triplet brother. However, due to his very traumatic childhood, he is easily angered and resorts to violence quickly, going as far as to break everything when he gets extremely angered. There is a tsundere side of him that not only Yui can see but also his brothers, and he usually gets teased about that by Laito. He's a delinquent type, kind of violent and loves to damage things. He's also a DO-S (extreme sadist), but despite all, can occasionally be sweet. His mother, Christa, described him as being gentle, even though she was the main reason for his horrible childhood and later for his lack of trust in females. He considers himself filthy and ignorant because of the ways his mentally ill mother had endlessly denounced him whilst either trying to kill him or begging him to kill her. The reason Subaru gave Yui a knife is because he wanted her to kill him and then he said if she can't do it, she should kill herself. History: Even though Christa knew very well what she is getting into, and that her "older brother" (her close blood relative Karlheinz whom she considers as a direct sibling, even though he's actually her cousin) already had two other wives, she preferred to self deceive and think that he only uses them and loves only her. Christa loving Karlheinz as a brother, didn't decline the marriage even though her consent was never really required. But when she found out about Karlheinz wanting to use her for creating an incest born child between them for his experiments only, she started to struggle in between hating and loving him and became mentally ill. By that time she was already pregnant with Subaru which only made her condition more complicated. Christa became mentally ill and bipolar, at one side loving Kalrheinz as her "kind big brother" and at the other side hating him like "that man that dirtied her". She begins to hate the baby even before he is born as something impure that will ruin her beauty. Because of this, Subaru's mother who is already extremely unstable put Subaru through the worst childhood. History: After Laito pushed Cordelia from the balcony, Richter, found her dying. She asked him to cut out her heart and implant it into another body. He did as she asked and implanted it into Yui, an abandoned girl who had the ideal body for Cordelia's heart. He then handed Yui to vampire hunter Seiji Komori, to avoid "Cordelia" from being taken away by his brother, Karlheinz. Seiji, who was also a priest, owned a church and raised Yui since then as his daughter. Because Cordelia was the daughter of the Demon King, her blood had a power flowing within it. Since her heart is inside of Yui, she is a power blood bank for the vampires.
