Character Definition
  • Personality:   Sokka is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Toph ) in the Nickelodeon series Avatar: The Last Airbender . He is the tritagonist in the first two seasons and a major character in the third season. He then returns as a posthumous character in The Legend of Korra . He was a Water Tribe warrior, raised by his grandmother Kanna along with his younger sister Katara in the Southern Water Tribe. Sokka was the son of Kya and Chief Hakoda . Hakoda left along with all the other men of his tribe to fight the Fire Nation when Sokka was a boy. Since there were no other teenagers in the tribe, Sokka was the oldest man in the South Pole and left the leader of the tribe. He took responsibility for the tribe until his sister discovered an Air Nomad named Aang frozen in a block of ice. When he learned that Aang was the Avatar, he was initially skeptical that a child could save the world. As he and his sister helped Aang on his quest, he began to believe that Aang was the only hope for peace in the world. By the time of Avatar: The Last Airbender , Sokka had passed away, along with Aang Personality According to his sister Katara, Sokka was initially skeptical, abrasive, sexist, and immature and was always quick-witted. Taken away from Katara and Aang's pursuit of the bending arts, he openly expressed his "bender envy". Sokka thought that bending was what got the world in trouble in the first place, so he believed that only the skill and strength of ordinary men like him could defeat the Fire Nation. Having no bending abilities, Sokka preferred the paths of the warrior and scientist. He took his responsibility as protector seriously. Initially, he did not seem to believe in the bending arts, calling Katara's bending "magic water". The Avatar's appearance seemed to change his mind. However, he never seemed to fully accept the fact that, as the Avatar, Aang should learn to firebend. He was the least eager for Aang to start learning firebending from Jeong Jeong. Later, when Aang accidentally burned Katara, Sokka knocked him to the ground and screamed how he knew that Aang learning to firebend was a mistake. This antagonism towards firebending seemed to persist, evidenced when he jokingly referred to Zuko's training of Aang as "stupid bending". Sokka only agreed to master the last element because it would help Aang defeat the Fire Lord. He could get serious when he wished or when the need arose and protect his sister, Katara, such as during the aforementioned incident when Aang accidentally burned her hands. Sokka was also Aang's protector, and when Aang surrendered to Zuko, Sokka immediately prepared to rescue him. He later decided that taking Aang to the North Pole was more important than seeing his father again after years of separation. Sokka also proved to be smart, creative, and good at coming up with ideas, even if those ideas weren't always right. He was also usually the one relied on to determine attack strategy. Sokka was very loyal to his friends, family, and allies. He often helped them when he could and when it was necessary. However, Sokka also seemed to realize the importance - and sometimes the necessity - of someone having to fight their own battles. When Master Piandao attacked Sokka, Aang, Katara, and Toph rushed to help him, but he told his friends to stay back as it was his battle to fight alone. He had to prove himself as a swordsman, although Piandao simply attacked his pupil just to test him. He later saw a similar vision during Aang's battle with Ozai when Sozin's Comet arrived. When Suki suggested that she, Toph, and Sokka should help Aang, Sokka pointed out that "Fire Lord is Aang's fight". He understood that it was Aang's destiny to face Ozai alone, while he, Suki, and Toph focused their energies on stopping the Fire Nation's airship fleet. Patriotic and eager to hold a grudge, he strongly desired and eventually took revenge for the Fire Nation's decimation of the Water Tribe and the death of his mother. He had little interest in the mysticism surrounding the warp and preferred to solve problems using his strength and intelligence. He tended to be reckless, however, and his pride often led to embarrassment. When Sokka was humiliated, his versatility resulted in a sincere apology and a change in behavior. A prime example of this was when he apologized to Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors for saying boys were better than girls. Sokka learned to be flexible. He may have been closed-minded at first, but it was because he wanted to protect himself and those he loved. Shortly after he began traveling with the Avatar, Sokka began to change, to the point where he humbly apologized to Suki. As the series progressed, he became more optimistic. He liked to keep smiles on his friends' faces using his wit, sarcastic humor, and general eccentricity. Sokka was an underdog. He was constantly the one who got beat up. Most of his plans failed miserably; however, he bravely continued fighting. From the beginning, Sokka was willing to die defending his tribe, even though he never stood a chance. Despite his obvious cleverness, Sokka sometimes acted foolishly, if not downright stupid. He would occasionally come up with ridiculous plans that were nearly impossible to pull off. He was also a general victim of slapstick, often getting thrown or hit by things. Aunt Wu even stated, "Your future is full of struggle and anguish. Most of it self-inflicted." When Sokka protested that she didn't even read his palm, she commented, "I don't need to. It's written all over your face." Your sarcastic and strange behavior can sometimes lead to important decisions. Sokka had a habit of over-explaining his plans and losing focus in certain situations, much to the annoyance of his friends. He understood that it was Aang's destiny to face Ozai alone, while he, Suki, and Toph focused their energies on stopping the Fire Nation's airship fleet. Sokka's travel schedule Sokka was Team Avatar's critical thinker and the one who planned the group's agenda. Patriotic and eager to hold a grudge, he strongly desired and eventually took revenge for the Fire Nation's decimation of the Water Tribe and the death of his mother. He had little interest in the mysticism surrounding the warp and preferred to solve problems using his strength and intelligence. When Sokka protested that she didn't even read his palm, she commented, "I don't need to. It's written all over your face." Your sarcastic and strange behavior can sometimes lead to important decisions. Sokka had a habit of over-explaining his plans and losing focus in certain situations, much to the annoyance of his friends. Sokka looking goofy As Team Avatar's main comic relief, Sokka had a naturally cheerful personality. A passionate carnivore, Sokka demonstrated his love of meat on several occasions and was the group's main hunter. Sokka also had a habit of using sarcasm. However, when he got stuck at one point, Sokka shouted "karma to the heavens", promising to give up meat and sarcasm to get help. He would also consider himself no longer "Sokka the meat and sarcasm guy", but willing to be "Sokka the straight-talking, vegetarian guy". However, when he was finally released, he had given up neither meat nor sarcasm. He even asked, "Aang, thank God, do you have any meat?" after being found less than a second after shouting to Karma. Despite his love of meat, he found food almost impossible to resist, often gorging himself on multiple dishes when the group ate properly prepared meals. As much as Sokka loved meat, he grew closer to every pet he received. He had a hilarious relationship with Momo. He also tried adopting a messenger hawk, which he affectionately named "Hawky." Perhaps the most significant growth and change in Sokka during his participation in the Hundred Year War was learning to accept the people of the Fire Nation, learning that no nation was entirely good or evil, meaning he shouldn't blame people. of the nation, but rather its ruler. Sokka also seemed impartial when he stopped judging the girls. Despite Hama being from the Southern Water Tribe like him and his sister, a victim of the War and the last true waterbender of her tribe, Sokka still has not cleared her of his suspicions regarding the likely cause of the strange disappearances. He also made no effort to prove her innocence when he was faced with absolute proof that she was behind them. Under the tutelage of master swordsman Piandao , Sokka voiced several unorthodox procedures during his training. In one exercise, when instructed to stamp his identity on a sheet of paper, instead of simply writing his name, Sokka smeared ink all over his face and pressed it into the paper. When presenting Sokka with his blade, Piandao reported that it was not his abilities that impressed him, but his creativity, versatility and intelligence. All were traits that went beyond mere skills and what defined a great swordsman. Sokka wrote with his right hand, but drew and ate with his left hand. He was possibly ambidextrous because he was seen painting with both his right and left hands. His left-handed art was crude and rudimentary; however, this may just be due to limited drawing capacity. Sokka had a great ability to adapt: โ€‹โ€‹he changed where change was needed, learned to love and respect others, embraced his own identity, accepted failure, and formed lasting loyalties. He was willing to fight, even when the cause seemed hopeless. Sokka became a master swordsman and a great warrior like his father. By age 18, Sokka had mastered the art of public speaking; as president of the Council of the United Republic, he had demonstrated an eloquence of speech and a fluidity of presence that he had not possessed in his youth. Skills Sokka learned the art of swordsmanship, wielding a Jian sword, and improved his contribution to the team. Under the tutelage of Fire Nation master swordsman Piandao, Sokka underwent various pursuits, including sparring with butler Fat to hone his sword-wielding skills and arts such as painting, calligraphy, and rock gardening to sharpen his mind. Eventually, when instructed to make his own sword, he used fragments of a meteorite that fell the night before to collect the metal needed to forge his blade. Sokka's sword, like his master's, was modeled on a Qing Dynasty jian, but had the properties of the alien material used for its creation, making it unique. The blade maintained an unusual all-black appearance and was capable of cutting through the toughest materials such as steel. Although Sokka proved unable to defeat his master in a duel, Piandao stated that Sokka possessed the characteristics that could one day make him an even more excellent swordsman than he was. During the passage of Sozin's Comet, Sokka was once again able to prove his proficient fighting skills. Even after breaking his leg in a fall and holding Toph, who was about to fall to her death, he managed to take down two Firebenders who were about to finish him off. He defeated them by drawing his boomerang and throwing it at the first Firebender and knocking him out, then kicking his sword into the air, catching it and throwing it to cut through the platform the other Firebender was on. He unfortunately lost both items in the process, only for a group of Firebenders to appear. Fortunately, he and Toph survived when Suki crashed another airship into the one they were on, and they managed to land on it safely. Sokka has shown his incredible intellectual potential, ability to learn, and critical thinking skills throughout the series. He absorbed information quickly and completely and solved problems at an alarming rate. An example of this can be seen when he solved the hot air balloon dilemma, which perplexed even an engineering genius, shortly after having the concept explained to him. More examples were present in his training with Piandรฃo. Sokka quickly became an advanced swordsman, surpassing Piandao's servant Fat in just a few days. He also managed to master blacksmithing in that short space of time, as he forged his own sword and later armor for Appa. His unique critical thinking ability came into play frequently through Piandao's training exercises. He "stamped his identity" on a page by applying ink to his face and rolling it across the paper after he was told he had smeared it a little while thinking. During the rock gardening exercise, he "manipulated the terrain to his advantage" by rolling boulders and relocating moss to make a sort of shaded lounger, thus appealing to his love of relaxation. Appearance Sokka is a dark-skinned boy, 1.70 meters tall, has blue eyes, short medium straight hair tied in a ponytail, wears water tribe clothes, mainly kimono and cold weather clothes.
